Our boat tours travel through the historic James River and Kanawha Canal along Downtown Richmond's Canal Walk. Narrators review centuries of Richmond’s history, from Powhatan’s Chiefdom to the first commercially successful electric streetcar in the world, all while traveling in authentically styled boats. Visitors will see the unique railroad Triple Crossing, historic 19th century architecture, the Virginia Capital Trail, the Low Line gardens and James River wildlife.

Hourly Historic Tours

40-minute historically narrated tours​

Our canal boat tours of the James River and Kanawha Canal operate throughout the season, seven days a week from May through October, and with varying hours in April and November.

  • Tours depart on the hour from the Canal’s Turning Basin at 139 Virginia Street, in Downtown Richmond, Virginia.

  • Tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis at the Turning Basin’s ticket kiosk and online up to 18 hours in advance.

  • Boats can accommodate up to 25 passengers and are accessible to those with physical disabilites.

  • No pets are allowed except for registered service animals.

Richmond Private Charters

Canal Cruise private charters are also available as one- to two plus-hour private boat tours that are a favorite for family reunions, celebrating birthdays, engagements, corporate retreats, business groups, churches, clubs and so many more group outings. Private charters may be scheduled for any day and time during the season, but must be reserved a minimum of two weeks in advance.​

Choose for your boat ride to be historically narrated, or choose to forgo the historic narration and take in the sights while listening to light music over a provided speaker. Boats can be outfitted with tables of various sizes that can accommodate light refreshments or a more formal, catered meal (catering is not provided by Riverfront Canal Cruises).

Weather: The 32-foot-long boats are covered with a canopy to protect riders from the weather, but we recommend checking the weather the day of and dress accordingly. Charters may be scheduled for any day and time during the boating season, are dependent on weather conditions and are scheduled on an individual basis, subject to availability.

Accessibility: The boats are handicapped accessible and can accommodate up to two wheelchairs.​

Reservations/Cancellations: Once scheduled, cruises can be canceled up to 7 days in advance without penalty. All reservations must be made online.

​Catering: You may hire your own caterer or bring your own food and beverages on your private charter. We require compliance with all applicable Virginia ABC laws and regulations for all private charters that bring alcohol. Unless you have hired a caterer to provide alcoholic beverages, this is likely to include obtaining your own banquet license. Information about the laws and the banquet license application are available on the Virginia ABC website. We do not hire caterers, serve or set up food and beverage service for private charters. We do, however, set up the tables and chairs/benches on the boats in advance of your charter.​


 

Private Charter Pricing and Guidelines​

Your chartered boat(s) may be set up in one of the following three configurations:

  • Dining style has tables and chairs, seating a maximum of 20 passengers.

  • Cocktail style has chairs, benches and a small table, seating a maximum of 22 passengers.

  • Excursion style has chairs and benches, seating a maximum of 25 passengers.

Rates

  • $165 per boat per hour

  • $130 per boat per hour for seniors and non-profits/educational groups

  • Reduced rates for booking multiple charters may be available. Email for details.

  • A 15% gratuity for your guide is recommended​

5/28 - Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, 6 & 7PM

  • Learn about the history and impact of the Virginia Capital Trail, the 51.7-mile paved trail connecting Richmond and Williamsburg. Guests will hear about the Foundation’s work and how to begin exploring one of Virginia’s most scenic outdoor experiences.

6/9 - Virginia State University Professor Scow - Identity and Change, 6PM

  • Examine themes of identity, memory, and change through the history of Richmond’s canal system. Guests will explore philosophical questions about how people and places evolve over time.

6/11 - Virginia State University Professor Scow - Philosophy of history, 6PM

  • Explore the philosophy of history through discussions of memory, storytelling, monuments, and historical interpretation. Guests will consider how the past is understood, preserved, and connected to the present and future.

6/19 - Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, 6 & 7PM

  • Examine the history and legacy of Juneteenth through stories of freedom and resilience following the Civil War. Guests will reflect on the experiences of formerly enslaved people and the meaning of liberation in Virginia.

6/23 + 6/25 - The Valentine Museum, 6PM

  • Discover Richmond’s role in the Revolutionary War during this special presentation celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Guests will learn about Patrick Henry’s famous speech, Benedict Arnold’s raid, and other defining moments from the era.

7/7 + 7/9 - St. John's Church, 6PM

  • Discover the history and significance of St. John’s Church, one of Richmond’s most iconic historic landmarks. Guests will learn about the church’s lasting influence on Richmond and the nation.

7/23 - American Civil War Museum, 6 & 7PM

  • Explore Richmond’s role during the Civil War through stories of industry, slavery, emancipation, and everyday life in the former capital of the Confederacy. Guests will hear about the people and events that shaped this pivotal period in history.

8/6 - Capital Trees, 6 & 7PM

  • Learn about the transformation of Richmond’s canal corridor and Low Line during this narrated tour with Capital Trees. Guests will discover how conservation, landscaping, and community stewardship are shaping vibrant public greenspaces along the waterfront.

8/18 + 8/20 - The Valentine Museum, 6PM

  • Explore one of Richmond’s most famous legal dramas, the 1807 treason trial of Aaron Burr. Guests will hear about the Burr Conspiracy, the “Feast of Treason,” and the lasting impact of Chief Justice John Marshall’s ruling.
