The Canal Walk Expands its Footprint

The Riverfront Canal Walk is expanding along the north side of the Haxall Canal between S. 10th and S. 11th Streets. The Canal Walk Extension Project (Phase 2) will be open to the public soon, completing a missing connection from the area in front of Casa Del Barco to South 10th Street. The long-awaited north-side extension, is owned and funded by the City of Richmond, and was facilitated by a partnership during the construction of The Locks Tower—a 12-story apartment building nearing completion at East Byrd Street and South 10th Street in Downtown Richmond.

The Locks Tower, which is being developed by WVS Cos. and Tom Papa, will have 237 apartments and 12,000 square feet of commercial space. You can read more about the development here. The tower will offer Canal Walk access, and the north side of the Canal Walk will now be accessible from S. 10th Street via a set of stairs.

The new section of the Riverfront Canal Walk will be maintained, as is the remainder of the Canal Walk, by Venture Richmond, and includes pedestrian-scale lighting, benches, and large planter boxes to green the area.

The full Canal Walk Extension Project received final approval from the Urban Design Committee and City Planning Commission in April 2012. Since this time, the Department of Public Works has been working with the Department of Planning and Development Review to implement the project in phases. This is Phase 2 of the project. The initial phase of implementation was completed in summer 2015 and included the new pedestrian bridge over the Haxall Canal in front of Casa Del Barco as well as plaza, lighting, and landscaping improvements along the Italianate building.
